S1600 - Sliabh Gaoil
NR818742, LR62. HISTORY Pillar completed 22nd September 1936 costing £26.15s.6d. Computed as primary station PP303 within Figure 6 of the OSGB36 retriangulation network during 1951. Levelled to second class precision in 1956. Last maintained by the OS in May 1981. SITE VISIT Overall approach from east. Parked in layby on A83 at NR863740. Entered track south of Abhainn Strathainn and followed said track as mapped to NR835745 where a finger post points to the 'hillwalk'. Nominally straight line west to NR826745 then SW to summit of Stob Odhar. Large open grazing hill of grass and rock. Pillar in good condition. Spider retains original looking metal OS centre cap which has never had any letters engraved into it. Flush bracket faces WNW, compass measurement 293°. Vented through SE & SW sight holes. Long views in all directions including Northern Ireland. Returned via same route aware that a police patrol car had stopped on the track to comms masts to apparently observe us.
