S8760 - Kilmichael
NR940937, LR55. HISTORY Pillar completed 15th May 1956 costing £86.4s.0d. Flush bracket S8760 was levelled to second class precision in 1956. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NS29/T61 within the Greenock secondary block during 1957. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in June 1980. SITE VISIT Approached from the south. Parking in Ardcastle Wood, NR942919. Up via a track on the opposite side of the A83, 150m to the NE at NR942922. From the track end at NR922930, the route mainly follows an old boundary wall, and climbs steeply around west side of Cread Fhaergach. The trig column is on a wild grassy moorland summit. The pillar is in fair condition. It has minor cracks nearthe bottom of the southwesterly edge, probably caused by icy blasts. The spider retains its original OS centre cap with raised large narrow letters. The flush bracket faces east, compass reading 99°. All four sight holes are open, the pillar bolt is viewable and was photographed. Full 360° panoramic view.
