NM625347, LR49. HISTORY Pillar completed in June 1959 costing £10.9s.9d. Computed as tertiary triangulation station NM52/T50 within the Mull secondary block, and levelled to second class precision during 1960. This pillar station was last maintained by the Ordnance Survey in July 1980. SITE VISIT Approached from the southeast. Park in the mapped forest entrance off A849 at NM642329. Headed straight up the steep SE flank as shown on the map. It was hard work over tussocks to begin with, but the going gets easier the higher you get. This Vanessa pillar is now recumbent, badly damaged and the flush bracket has gone. The cylinder has broken through just above flush bracket level. The upper two thirds of the trunk including the spider are lying beside the vertically cracked stump suggesting a possible lightning strike. Other specific pieces of concrete lying together by one side of the carnage suggest that the flush bracket may have been parted from the base section more recently. The spider centre is open. The flush bracket faced north, compass measurement 3°. Vented through all four sight holes, the innards are blocked with debris. The potential 360° panoramic view was lost to low cloud but breaks did allow occasional glimpses of the surrounding hill-scape. Photographed: 4th June 2019, GRP* * Vanessa remains photographed: 4th June 2019, GRP. Flush bracket photographed, June 2015, JF.
