The famous panorama of The Dornoch Firth from Struie Hill, Easter Ross, Scotland.
The famous panorama of The Dornoch Firth from Struie Hill, Easter Ross, Scotland.

Commentary. The advantage of taking the short-cut between Alness and Bonar Bridge, is this view. The A.9 circumnavigates most of the Cromarty Peninsula, going past Invergordon and Tain on its traverse, northwards, across the Dornoch Firth Bridge to Golspie, Brora, Helmsdale, Lybster and ultimately, Wick, in Caithness. The B.9176 strikes northwards over the higher land of Easter Ross. From the northern bluff of Struie Hill, before the road turns north-west to Bonar Bridge, this view, from 180 metres, shows the Dornoch Firth, as far as Bonar Bridge, and the Kyle of Sutherland, beyond. The main railway line, northwards, is clear, on a causeway, to the left of the image. The East Coast is much lower, gentler and greener than the West Coast of Scotland. As here, many of its inlets are “rias,” drowned river valleys. A large part of the shores of the Dornoch Firth is taken up by sandy beaches, dunes and sandbanks. Its slopes have considerable areas of commercial pine forest with farmland and grazing on the lower slopes. From this vantage point, these land-uses, make for a vibrant, colourful and impressive scene.
