Oldmoreshore Beach, Sutherland, Scotland.
Commentary. Between Ardnamurchan and Cape Wrath is a mere 100 miles, as the crow flies. However, the amazingly convoluted West Coast of Scotland twists and turns for nearly 1,500 miles between these two points. Over 250 superb sandy beaches are also found within these bounds. Many would claim that some of the most pristine, unspoiled and most beautiful beaches in the world are to be found here. The role of honour of just a few is humbling, profound and almost spiritual. Sanna Bay (7), White Sands of Morar and Arisaig (50), Plockton (5), Red Point (3), Gairloch (3), Loch Ewe (3), Mellon Udrigle, Gruinard Bay (7), Achnahaird, Achmelvich, Clashnessie, Oldshoremore (2) and, ofcourse, Sandwood Bay. Including the coastline of Argyll, Ayrshire, the South and East coasts, nearly 800 islands and over 31,000 lochs and lochans there must be over 1,000 such beaches in Scotland. Remarkable for a country of less than 31,000 square miles. Some beaches are over five miles long. Many are small crescents in a cove. Some are popular and some so remote that a 5-10-mile walk may be required to reach the shore. A considerable number enjoy vistas that are incredibly beautiful.

Oldmoreshore Beach, Sutherland, Scotland.
Commentary. Almost seven hundred and fifty miles from the Channel coast, remote Assynt, in north-west Sutherland, is home to a plethora of white shell-sand beaches. Each and every one is pure, pristine and unspoiled. On a glorious summer’s day the beach is so isolated it feels like your own private property. Oldshoremore is twelve miles south of Cape Wrath and a couple of miles north-west of Kinlochbervie. Superb is an over-used word, but not here!!!
